Project Description
WHO were requested by the UN Office of the Iraq Program to procure the design, construction and initial provisioning of a new 400 Bed Hospital in Suleimaniyeh in Northern Iraq, pursuant to the UN / Iraq \"Oil for Food Programme\". This hospital was considered essential to improve the deficient health care facilities in the Governate of Suleimaniyeh. Associated Consulting Engineers International (ACE) was appointed as Design Consultant for the Project.
The hospital building has been designed with due consideration to its medical function, character, innovation, urban responsiveness and spatial frameworks of accessibility, legibility, amenity, architecture and engineering, and to provide a facility with well integrated departmental organization and design, to best serve patients, staff and visitors. The building design incorporates 6 levels: three podium levels and a recessed wards tower above the podium:
• Level 0 includes support services, kitchen, laundry, staff areas, and morgue, sterilization, X-ray and
pharmacy departments.
• Level 1 includes the main entrance with easy direct access to the outpatient department and to the
administration department placed on either side of the entrance. This level also has the laboratory, functional diagnostics,
nuclear medicine and physiotherapy ergotherapy departments. A separate entrance to the east
provides direct access to the accident / emergency department located at this level.
• Level 2 includes the operating theaters, the intensive care units and the maternity wards as well as the ambulatory care
and operation department.
• Level 3 and 4 include patient wards.
• Level 5 includes the children\'s ward and the totally isolated infectious diseases ward.
The total number of patient beds is 414; 368 of which in the various wards and 46 for intensive care. Excluding balconies, open walkways and covered entrances, the total building area is 47,066 m².
Consultancy Services
In addition to the building complex, services provided in the design include all mechanical and electrical installations necessary for medical, non-medical and other hospital functions and operations. The structural design incorporates all applicable loadings including the requirements of seismic zone 3. All infrastructure and ancillary support facilities were also included. Tender documents were prepared by the Design Consultant for the Project including Bidding Procedures and Contract Conditions; Specifications; Bill of Quantities; Drawings; and non-medical furniture.
